While not quite as surreal as Pink Floyd’s version, ‘The Wall’ still offered a pretty trippy experience for Sylar and Peter. Several years and a few hours later, it didn’t seem like they were going to make any progress on Peter’s hare-brained scheme to bust Sylar out of his mental prison.
The rest of the episode showed us Samuel’s attempts to create a permanent rift between Claire and Noah by revealing to Claire, and us, the “Secret Origin” of H.R.G. By that I don’t mean the origins of the odd fashion choice Mr. Bennett has made in eyewear, but the secret past he hasn’t shared with Claire, Sandra or anyone in his life.

Why do this? Because apparently, and I still don’t know why, Claire is important to Samuel’s plans. In that she is a “special,” I agree. In any other regard, she’s not that remarkable. And where he left things, it seems he just might have figured that out.
We’ve learned in recent episodes that Samuel is much like a petulant child. He gets upset when he doesn’t get his way and has been known to slaughter entire towns in a fit of rage. It’s not a surprise that he buried Noah and Claire at the end of this penultimate episode, but I wonder if he’s truly done with her. After all, he can always raise her up later and watch her come back to life.
I just feel sorry for the kids in Central Park who want to get a souvenir before they get slaughtered so Samuel can prove a point.
The slow evolution of the kinder, gentler Sylar got a major head start as he spent three years alone in his head after what Matt did to him. Three years to him which equated to three hours in our world. By that math, he and Peter spent an additional nine years together trapped in that world. A lot can change in that time. According to our penal system, full rehabilitation is possible in that span of time, though I think Sylar would get multiple life sentences or the death penalty for his list of crimes.
Zachary Quinto has done such an amazing job of crafting the villainous Sylar that it’s hard to imagine that facet of his personality being gone completely. Plus, I’m still not convinced that there aren’t trace elements of Nathan in there somewhere influencing him. We got confirmation of Nathan’s memories; memories which Sylar has difficulty differentiating from his own; still being inside Sylar, so it’s not too far-fetched.
I give Lauren credit for having the guts to just waltz into a carnival full of super-powered people. I have no idea how she was skilled enough to escape Multiple Man, but that’s no mean feat. It was a little disappointing that Emma so quickly turned her in to Samuel, but she’s clearly misguided.
Perhaps it was just to move the plot forward, but I have to address the fact that after Peter bonded with Sylar in the last episode, Matt went ahead and finished up the wall and then just left Peter there propped up against it for half a day? If Matt was truly convinced that Peter was now gone, forever trapped in the prison he’d created for Sylar, he could have at least put him on a couch, or gotten him some pillows.
Then, at the end, where the hell was Matt that Multiple Man could just waltz into his house like it was no big deal? I guess he could be at work or something, but it seemed a glaring absence. I’m sure it was so they didn’t have to pay Greg Grunberg for the episode appearance, but I have questions, dammit!
Questions aside, it looks like next week’s finale will be interesting indeed. There’s a lot to wrap up in an hour, especially if they want to address all of the principal cast members. We haven’t seen Mohinder or Tracy much at all this season. It’s still unclear if this will be the final season of ‘Heroes’ or not, but just in case, I hope we get something satisfying for those of us who’ve remained loyal through the good, the bad and the surprisingly good again.

From the look of the preview, “Heroes” takes a twist of story, making Sylar no longer the villain. In the climactic season finale, everyone bands together in an effort to stop Samuel from taking the lives of thousands. Peter joins forces with his most unexpected ally to save Emma (guest star Deanne Bray).

Meanwhile, H.R.G.’s life hangs in the balance as he and Claire find themselves trapped underground with oxygen quickly running out. H.R.G. figures out that Samuel traps them together so she can watch him die. Elsewhere, Hiro starts to come to grips with the decisions he has made and is called into action to help stop a disaster.
Called “Brave New World“, the last episode in volume 5 is to air on February 8. Despite airing the season finale, NBC has not announced whether there will be a fifth season. Back in January, NBC’s Head of Entertainment, Angela Bromstad said there is a high chance the show would be renewed despite its struggling viewership. Creator Tim Kring was asked to pitch ideas for the new season and NBC would give it consideration.

Its ratings are historically low for a network drama, but its small fan base is passionate.
Moreover, DVD sales and international viewership for remains strong.
For these reasons, and because NBC is run by a group of people dumber than the cast of Jersey Shore, there’s a chance Heroes will return for a fifth season. But should it?
But enough from us. What do you think? Should NBC renew the series for another season?
Forces are starting to converge at the Sullivan Bros. Carnival as we get closer and closer to the finale — two weeks away now! After last week’s stunt where he wiped out an entire town, the “family” at the carnival is understandably a little wary of Samuel. He did, after all, erase a small town killing hundreds of people. I’d give him a wide berth.
Maybe if I was invulnerable, I’d be more willing to get closer to him. Claire certainly has no reason to be afraid, right? She stumbled upon her father’s plans regarding taking down Samuel and shutting down the carnival for good. Like Edgar, she is concerned about Noah’s plans to break apart the family. Noah, as usual, is bull-headed and stubborn. I’m just not sure under what authority he was acting throughout this episode.
As for Sylar, we saw him at the Parkman house. And we know how powerful Matt is. Maybe, just maybe, this psychopath can be taken care of for good. Not hardly.
Not so long as Peter Petrelli still has breath in his lungs. The biggest idiot on the show, with the worst lighting in his apartment, rushes headlong into the situation at Parkman’s and takes matters into his own hands. After all, he’s Peter Petrelli. Nobody could possibly know better than him about anything. Don’t even bother to really get behind what Matt saw in Sylar’s head, or completely understand what he did to him or why he’s bricking him up in his basement. Steal his power and save Sylar so that your weird trippy dream can come true.
For that matter, he never even got any real clarification from Angela about the dreams. Dreams aren’t necessarily literal, I thought. Certainly all of Angela’s weren’t. And yet, Peter’s certain that only Sylar can save Emma from killing tons of innocent souls. It did look like the Puppet Master was forcing her to play the cello, thus luring them in with her siren abilities. And it does seem pretty straightforward that Samuel would have her bring in more people with special abilities.
He’d better be careful, though, because if he gets too powerful he could crack the earth, and then where would he be?
I’m sure none of us bought for a minute that Samuel was really going to turn himself into Noah — again under what authority does HRG have to even accept a surrender? — but I didn’t see his clever use of the Multiple Man to frame Noah for shooting recklessly into the carnival. Multiple Man certainly doesn’t seem to have any of the moral conflicts that Ray had.
As for Lydia, well, her concerns don’t matter anymore. I suspect Samuel intentionally had Multiple Man target her and take her out during the volley. Why not remove a dissenter who could easily expose his true intentions with but one touch. But where was her daughter? Did she actually leave the carnival already?
I’m actually going to give Claire credit for trying to do the right thing, and even being intelligent about it. Had it not been for Samuel’s super-evil counterplan, she might have actually accomplished something notable all by herself. Our little Claire is actually going to grow into a character who does things, rather than just whine about them? Hell, she just about stole her roommate’s car.
With only two episodes left this season (forever?), things are coming to a head at the carnival. Emma’s just arriving, and still completely fooled by Samuel’s nice guy act. And I guess in this big season finale battle … Sylar will be the savior of mankind? Will we get a teaser of “Volume Six” even, or are they confident enough they’ll be back. It’s not like NBC has much going for it.

Did you know that there are only two new episodes of Heroes left this season? It’s ending a little early (no repeats), and from what we saw in the coming attractions after last night’s episode, it looks like we’re heading towards a showdown involving the carnival and Peter and Sylar trapped…somewhere. Sylar’s mind or something, a big city they can’t escape. Peter just rushed into Matt’s house and immediately grabbed Sylar’s head even though Matt was telling him not to. Serves him right if he’s trapped.
Greg Grunberg talks to Digital Spy and he has a lot to say about the rest of the season (and a possible fifth season). While he repeats what he said about the season finale not at all being a series finale (NBC still hasn’t made up its mind about a new season), Grunberg also says that the network screwed up the show this season by moving it to 9pm and not telling anyone about it.
Does he have a point? I think Chuck got more press for coming back in Heroes’ time slot than Heroes got for moving to 9pm, but people have been abandoning it anyway.
As if painfully slow storytelling and an utter lack of suspense and logic weren’t clear enough signs that Heroes is a mess, consider this:
The show’s creator and one of its stars can’t even get on the same interviewing page!
Earlier this month, Tim Kring spoiled the conclusion to the lame Hiro/Charlie storyline. Will Hiro find his long lost love? But in a new interview with TV Guide, Masi Oka tried to tease upcoming events related to his character, saying:
“Let’s put it this way: He has to find Charlie and it will be resolved by the Winter Olympics. I can’t say what kind of reunion it will be, but there will be a resolution. Whether it’s good or not, the audience will have to decide.”

Don’t worry, Masi: we’ll gladly chime in with our thoughts, just as we did when reacting to last week’s awful episode. As for whether or not Heroes will see a fifth season, the actor (shockingly!) thinks there ought to be one:
“I haven’t gotten any word on a renewal, but everyone agrees the show does deserve a proper ending, just because we want to pay homage to fans who have stuck with us from the beginning… Hopefully it won’t be like The X-Files where we need a movie to wrap things up.”
We agree. Charging fans $10 to watch Heroes would be biggest rip-off since the 2000 Presidential election.
Everyone bands together to try to stop Samuel from taking the lives of thousands; Peter teams with an unexpected ally to save Emma; H.R.G.’s life hangs in the balance; Hiro comes to grips with decisions he has made.
“Objection, your honor. He’s reciting the opening to Quantum Leap.” — Adam Monro, prosecuting attorney in Hiro’s mind-trial
This week, it was time to deal once and for all with that pesky tumor in Hiro’s brain. This isn’t Eli Stone, after
all. Not to mention how downright loopy he’s been lately. So apparently the resolution is for his body to collapse while he faces a strange trial in the diner where he met, failed-to-save, and then did save Charlie. David Anders reprised his role as Adam Monroe to prosecute our time traveling hero, while George Takei presided over the thing as his father and the judge.
The rest of the episode was split between Sylar’s quest to figure out why Lydia’s ability was directing him to Claire, and Samuel’s attempts to woo Vanessa after he’d kidnapped her. I can say, that I thought he was off to a rough start on that one.
I haven’t tried it (yet), but I don’t imagine kidnapping a woman is the best way to convince her to be your gal; even if you do have history. We didn’t really learn anything we didn’t already know, except that the Samuel we’ve been seeing thus far was actually the kind and gentle Samuel.
He did everything he could to convince Vanessa that they could pick up right where they left off. They apparently had fantasy dreams about the perfect house and the perfect life together, like young and naive people often do. Unfortunately, while Samuel remains very much the emotional child, Vanessa has grown up and moved on with her life. She can’t accept his offer, even if the Central Park growing guy did create a beautiful oasis, with Samuel and Vanessa’s dream house right in the middle of it.
Of course he can’t kill Vanessa, so how do you heal a broken heart if your heart is that of a psychopathic stalker with petty jealousy and rage issues — not to mention the ability to move the earth? You let your love go … and then completely wipe a small town right off the map. No more Mr. Nice Guy; he’s not even trying to hide what a monster he’s become anymore.
Across the country, Sylar can’t seem to reclaim the monster he was. I’ll give him credit for his Gretchen switcheroo, because I didn’t see that one coming. When the direct approach failed, he used the subtle approach to find out what pearls of wisdom our former cheerleader could offer him, while helping her to understand her own problems with intimacy, as well. What did they learn? They’re both hiding behind their abilities to keep people in their lives at bay.
Sylar, with so many abilities, has basically lost his humanity because of them, so the only way to get them back is to lose the abilities. It’s too bad Papa Petrelli is dead. He had a knack for that. Not to mention, didn’t Sylar lose his abilities once before, albeit temporarily? Did he become more human and complete then?
As for Claire, she realized that she needed to open up with Gretchen, which apparently means embracing her own willingness to explore a same-sex relationship. I’m still not sure if it’s college experimentation, genuine bisexuality or lesbianism, or just a need to reach out to someone in need and finding someone to reciprocate. I’d imagine Claire isn’t all that sure either. Still, might she actually find happiness? And have Sylar to thank for it?
As for Hiro, his “trial” was basically him trying to process the decisions he’s made in relation to his code of heroism and honor, and his saving of Charlie only to lose her again to Samuel (this time, in time!). None of it really mattered, but it was fun seeing both Takei and Anders back on the show. The swordfight between Hiro and Adam made symbolic sense, as it was Hiro fighting to save himself, but the whole thing was a bit too cheesy for me to take.
I’m definitely looking forward to next week, though, as things start to build to the season finale. I’d actually grown fractionally more confident of a fifth season for Heroes when The Jay Leno Show got canceled. After all, that’s five hours of scheduling added back to the schedule. But the ratings performances — below 5 million a week now! — just keep looking worse and worse. I don’t think the best ever episodes of Heroes ever at this point would be enough to lure viewers back. Do you want Heroes to come back next fall, or shoot for a satisfying series finale this season?
